Dr. Shayan Irani, MD, is a Gastroenterologist at the Virginia Mason Medical Center. He completed his education at Temple University Hospital. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He specializes in pancreaticobiliary diseases, gastrointestinal oncology, Barrett’s Esophagus, gastrointestinal stenting, endoscopic mucosal resection, submucosal dissection, radio frequency ablation, and other advanced therapeutic and emerging techniques.

Vanessa M. Shami, MD, is a professor of medicine and director of endoscopic ultrasound in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She completed her internal medicine residency as well as her gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Virginia. Subsequently, she completed an advanced therapeutic endoscopy fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr. Shami has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Virginia Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award, and is an elected member of the University of Virginia Academy of Distinguished Educators. She maintains a busy clinical practice, which embraces her interests in Barrett’s ablation, upper and lower endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), GI oncology, and pancreaticobiliary medicine. Her clinical research has led to numerous papers, and she co-edited a textbook on endoscopic ultrasound. Dr Shami currently serves as an American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Governing Board Councilor.

Dr. Jeffrey Mosko is an assistant professor of medicine and a clinician in quality and innovation at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto. He is a co-director of both the advanced endoscopy fellowship and the International Course on Therapeutic Endoscopy. He is the chair of endoscopy for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. His clinical expertise is in both luminal and pancreaticobiliary advanced endoscopy. His research interests are in quality improvement in endoscopy.
Dr. Gary May received his MD from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (1985), completed his internship and internal medicine training at the University of British Columbia, and his Gastroenterology training at the University of Calgary (1991). Dr. May completed his fellowship training in biliary and advanced therapeutic endoscopy at Duke University Medical Centre, Durham, North Carolina, under the mentorship of Dr. Peter Cotton (1993). From 1993 to 2004, Dr. May was on the faculty at the University of Calgary, where he practiced at the Foothills Hospital. In 2004, Dr. May was recruited to St. Michael’s Hospital, where his interests as a clinician-teacher are in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, and endoscopic oncology, including advanced EMR, POEMS, and ESD. He is a co-director of the successful International Therapeutic Endoscopy Course held annually at St. Michael’s Hospital. He is currently the head of the Division of Gastroenterology at St. Michael’s Hospital.
GUEST SPEAKER Muhammad K. Hasan, MD, FACG, FASGE Medical Director Center for Interventional Endoscopy CIE AdventHealth Medical Group Orlando, FL
Dr. Hasan is a clinical gastroenterologist specializing in advanced endoscopic procedures, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), advanced polyp resection techniques (endoscopic mucosal resection EMR/endoscopic submucosal dissection, ESD), and more.
Dr. Hasan completed his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship training at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, and then two years of advanced endoscopy training at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville for EUS, and at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, for ERCP in 2010. He is a staff physician at AdventHealth, Orlando (formerly known as Florida Hospital), since 2010, and helped establish the Center for Interventional Endoscopy, CIE at Florida Hospital in 2013.
Dr. Hasan’s interests include clinical research, trainee and professional education, and innovation in endoscopic techniques. His research focuses on clinical outcomes associated with endoscopic procedures as well as clinical disease states. He has initiated many research projects independently and has participated in multiple multi-center projects as a co-investigator, resulting in over 70 original publications, including premier journals such as Gut, Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has authored book chapters as well.
He is actively engaged in professional societies and is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow. He has served as a member and the chair of the Annual Scientific Program Committee for the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Digestive Diseases Week (DDW), the largest annual international gastroenterology meeting, and regularly reviews abstracts for annual American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) meetings.
